ReplyDelete" Cincin Emas (The Golden Ring) - A Rahman Onn
He recorded this song in his first EP with an independent label called Anchor, with a band called The Strangers. This song hit the top chart of Radio Singapura for 9 consecutive weeks in 1966. There is a sequel for this song, which was given the title Cincin Emas Telah Diterima (The Golden Ring Accepted), recorded three years later with the same band but on a different label, which is the EMI. Another hit in the very first album he recorded was Perachun Kalbu (The Heartbreaker), which is also a top hit in the same year. His other hits include Bila-kah Berjumpa (When Will We Meet Again) - a rock-n-roll stuff - and Aku Nak Pulang (I Wanna Go Home).
Ikatan Janji (A Promise) - Orkid Abdullah & M Fadzil
Hari Raya -M Osman and Afida Es
This is a song about Eidulfitri, a Muslim celebration. This song was recorded with a band called The Siglap Boys (not to be mistakenly regarded with Jeffridin's band The Siglap Five!). Some trivia about M. Osman and Afida Es. Osman used to work as a proofreader for P. Ramlee's magazine called Gelanggang Filem (The Film Playing Field) when he was barely 17 years old. Also, M. Osman acted in two Cathay Keris films - Chuchu Dato' Merah (Dato' Merah's Grandson, 1962) and Kaseh Dan Sayang (Love and Affection, 1965) - as an extra. Afidah also acted as an extra in the film Anak Manja (The Spoilt Child, 1963), a Studio Merdeka release. In their later years, they acted in many TV dramas produced and directed by their eldest son, Aziz M. Osman, who also acts in films and dramas.
Suzanna -M Osman
This is Osman's debut song, recorded in early 1965, with The Mods. His other song in the same EP (by Olympic) was Risau (Worried). The remaining two was recorded by Afida Es and her younger sister, Enna Es, who also had a separate EP with The Mods on Precious Urn Record.
Kenanganku (My Memories) -Dato Jeffrydin
This song is included in his debut EP with other three songs: Seruling Anak Gembala (A Young Shepherd's Flute) which is another top hit, Seruling Bambu (A Bamboo Flute) and Peristiwaku (My Past Events) - recorded with The Siglap Five. The record was sold very well, and I read somewhere that almost every Malay hosuehold with a record player had this EP that time. The record was issued by Philips in 1966, where all the recordings was done at Kinetex Studio in Singapore. Due to their popularity, they were invited to perform as guest stars in the film Aksi Kuching (The Cat's Act) in the same year.
Temasah Ria (A Happy Party) - M Said & Les Remaja
ReplyDeleteThis is my very first time listening to the song. His top hit was Malam Pasar Ria (A Funfair At Night). This evening, I managed to listen another hit of the late M. Said called Dendang Muda Mudi (Songs of the Youth), which was as lively as this one.
Kenanganku - M Fadzil and Les Coasters
In the film A-Go-Go '67, this song was performed by A. Nadar & The Zaraks.
Kesah Dongeng Sang Pelangi (A Tale on Rainbow) - M Fadzil and Les Coasters
This song was recorded in 1970, post-pop yeh yeh period, but Fadzil has always been requested to sing this song in his shows, due to the pop-yeh-yeh music touch.
Aku Kechewa (I'm Disappointed)- Roziah Latiff and the Jayhawkers
Coincidently, Eddie Ahmad & The Antartics recorded another song with similar title, while Sakura & The Quests did the Mandarin version!
Kan Hilang Nanti (It Will Fade Away)- A Halim and De Fictions
Kembali Lagi (Coming Back) - A Halim and De Fictions
These songs are new to me, but De Fictions were known to change their style of performance.
Akibat Chinta (Because of Love)- A Karim Jais and Les Fentones
This is not their top hit, but worth listening to. You may include their signatures such as Julaidah and Bahagia Menjelma (Happiness Emerges). They also appeared in another Cathay Keris film called Playboy in 1967.
Malam Pesta (The Night Fiesta)- Asmah Attan and D' Pioneers
Another hit by Asmah was Muda Remaja (The Young Teenager) recorded on Camel Record with The Teruna.
Aku Kalah Judi (I Lost In Gambling)- Halim Yatim irinigan Halimi Combo
This is not a pop yeh yeh song as it was recorded in 1971. In 1967, Halim Yatim had his first record with The Sangam Boys featuring Jandaku (My Ex-Wife) and Jauh Pandangan (Far Sighted). Jandaku was banned from Malaysian radio on religious grounds. After The Sangam Boys, Halim recorded with Les Malinja. The word Sangam was actually means "unity" in Hindi, taken after a film of the same name which hit the Malaysian box-office in 1964. Halim Yatim and The Sangam Boys appeared in the film Pop Muda (The Young Pop Artiste) in 1968.
Surat Ku Untuk Mu (My Letter To You) - J Sham and the Wanderers
Besides this, I love J. Sham's other numbers like Di-Pinggir Kali (At The Riverside) and Diam Diam (Keep Quiet).
Hanya Laguku (Only My Song)- Dato A Rahman Hassan and Orkes Nirwana
ReplyDeleteSyurga Idaman (A Dreamt Paradise) - Datin Azizah Muhammad and Orkes Nirwana
Both are my favorites. Rahman's signature song was Tak Mengapa (Never Mind). I love his other songs like Perpaduan Hidup (Unity of Life), Aku Kan Pergi (I'll Leave) and Harapanku (My Hope). Azizah's songs called Bahagialah Hendaknya (Happy At Last), Usah Dikesalkan (Don't Regret It) and Idaman Tercapai (A Dream Come True) are also wonderful.
Sidiya Sayang (She's The One I Love)- Adnan Othman
Hamba Terima (I Accept It)- Adnan Othman
Normah -Adnan Othman
Surprisingly, Hamba Terima is actually a devotional song performed in blues - how creative Adnan is! Another song of similar nature by him is Bershukor (Being Thankful).
Oh Teruna - Fatimah M Amin and the Clans
So far, this is the most popular song by her.
Mak itty Mak Illa - Kassim Selamat and the Swallows
Leh Paju Molle (Let's Go Home) - Kassim Selamat and the Swallows
Both recorded in 1968 on the same record.
Setahun Tak Jumpa Sesaat Tak Lupa (A Year In Absence, But you won't Be Forgotten Even A Second)- Zam Zam and the Twilites
Many of Zam Zam's songs bear long titles like this one. Another hit by him sharing this kind of feature is Bibir Mesra Jiwa Parah (Sweet Lips Make Your Heart Aches).
Dunia Yang Permai - Eddie Ahmad and the Antartics
The English version of this was recorded by The Quests. The drummer of the Antartics, Syed Ali Omar a.k.a SA Vinton wrote both versions.
Siapa Gerangan (Who is He) - Sanisah Huri and the Terwellos
Appeared in A-Go-Go 67.
Ku Mohon Doa (I Pray To God)- Wan Intan and the Mods
Also appeared in A-Go-Go 67.
10 Budak Hitam (10 Black Boys) - Aziz Jaafar and Saloma & Dendang Perindu
ReplyDeleteAziz Jaafar is both a singer and actor in many of Shaw Brothers' Malay films. He had been active in both since 1950s, same like his wife Noormadiah. Another duet by Aziz and Saloma in A-Go-Go 67 was Waspada (Beware), also recorded with Dendang Perindu. Dendang Perindu, led by Yusnor Ef's best friend Kassim Masdor, accompanied many EMI artistes in the 1960s.
Alam Seni (The World of Art)- Siti Zaiton and the Hornets
This version appeared on the soundtrack of A-Go-Go 67, but later re-recorded on vinyl by Sanisah Huri & The Terwellos. The Hornets have their own record, too.
Undanglah Aku (Invite Me)- Jaafar O and the Click 4
I have both Jaffar O's records. Undanglah Aku, Kasih Terpisah (A Love Torn Apart), Merindu Kasih (Missing My Lover) and Punggok Merindukan Bulan (An Owl Misses The Moon) are among Jaafar's top hits. Jaafar died earlier this year at 66 due to diabetic complications. He was survived by his fourth wife, 70s singer Mahani Mohamad.
Kenangan Menjelma (Memories Emerged)- M Wari and the Cliffters
Another song by M. Wari that you should include is Riwayat Sangkuriang (A Tale of Sangkuriang), recorded with The Fabian Boys. M. Wari also acted in the film Panglima Besi (The Steel Warrior). Like The Swallows, The Cliffters are also Boyanese musicians, where all of them are Bajuree brothers - Alistini, Jack, Marstino and Rickieno. Alistini had his own record with The Fabian Boys later on, while Rickieno is the leading vocalist of The Cliffters.
Kaca Mataku (My Sunglasses)-- Rafeah Buang and the Swallows
Rafeah Buang had been singing since she was a child. She lent her voices in many Malay films, too. In 1971, Rafeah married to a Pahang prince and since then, her singing career began to slow down. Rafeah retired from singing to become a columnist in the entertainment magazine URTV, besides writing a book on Pahang Malay culture. She died in 2002 at 55, after battling with servical cancer.
Yale Yale - M Ishak
This is a remake of the same recorded in 1953 for the film Istana Impian (My Dream Palace).
Kecewa Selalu (Always Disppointed)- A Nandong and D Fictions
Kesalahanku - Siti Zaiton and the Fyrebirds
Next time, you could also include her signature hit Malang Selalu (Always Be Unlucky).
