Singapore Karaoke place my friend Elsa took me to.. the sign mentions "Halal" songs ?
Malay/Indo hits are a featured selection on the Karaoke.. as well as Hindi, Japanese, US top 40 rock hits, etc..
my friends, singing a Malay rock ballad.
( Elsa, right, is lead singer for a US metal/rock band Soul Distraction - She did an incredible version of White Rabbit this evening.. what a voice! her brother Ian, left, is also a pretty great singer, and a music and video producer. He's got a couple punk bands and an industrial trance music project. totally awesome evening )

I've never come across "halal" in relation to music before. It begs the question of what's not halal -- although I think I have a pretty good idea of what that might be. But how about pop yeh yeh? I wonder if it was considered not halal at the time.
ReplyDeleteActually,I was hoping there would be a few Pop Yeh Yeh songs there too - but only a couple 70s songs like Sharifah Aini, and some by Salim I -- but they said it was a different Salim I
ReplyDeleteI think you probably are guessing the meaning correctly... : ) Songs that aren't somehow offensive or against the morals of islam maybe?
Amazing pics, Carl. I really wondered why the "Halal" was there!
ReplyDeleteGreat... nice pictures Carl, I wish you should take similar pictures in India in your next visit to India... there is lots to learn
