Gues Blogger Ghaz : THE PRETENDERS

 THE PRETENDERS

The Pretenders were among the Malay pop yeh yeh bands who appeared in films in 1960s, either performing as guest stars or just providing musical background. However, only one studio recording EP by them issued by Philips, where they accompanied R. Ismail.

OST Aksi Kucing 1966 - Budi Setahun Segunung Intan - Ahmad Jais, Kartina Dahari

The Pretenders accompanied S. Salihin to perform Balasan Budi-mu (Reciprocating Your Good Deeds) in the Cathay Keris film Dosa Wanita (A Woman’s Sin) [1967]. S.Salihin & The Pretenders - Balasan Budimu (OST Dosa Wanita 1967)

Guest Blogger Ghaz : THE POP YEH YEH SOUND FROM MUAR, JOHOR

The map of the State of Johor, south Peninsular Malaysia with Muar as one of its districts.

Muar, or also known as Bandar Maharani, is one of the districts in the Peninsular Malaysian state of Johor.  It is a popular tourist attraction with many historical sites and delicious delicacies like mee bandung (prawn gravy noodle) and the famous Kopi 434 (434 Coffee). Apart from both, another attraction of Muar is its unique traditional Arab-Malay music called ghazal.  Besides the state’s capital city of Johor Bahru, Muar also has quite a number of pop yeh yeh bands and singers in the 1960s, among which are featured in this article. Many of them had their hits topping on radio charts in both Malaysia and Singapore, sharing the same limelight with their counterparts in other states within the country as well as the republic itself.

LES FLINGERS

Les Flingers hailed from Jalan Khatib in Muar, Johor and was established in 1965. The band consisted of A. Zanne (leading vocalist), L. Muharram (second vocalist), Yahya Kosai (lead guitarist), Taib Jaafar (rhythm guitarist), Omarhara Ahmad (bass guitarist) and Rahim Omar (drummer cum band manager). Prior to recording, Les Flingers had received many invitations from RTM to perform on stage throughout the state of Johor itself, besides its neighboring states of Melaka and Negri Sembilan. Les Flingers had only managed to cut an EP under Philips, recorded in 1966 and distributed the following year. The distinct features of this band is that all members could play music and sing in harmony at the same time.

Les Flingers – Mungkin-kah? (Maybe?) [1966]

Les Flingers – Sa-hati Sa-jiwa (Harmony) [1966]

Les Flingers – Dikau-lah Chahaya (You’re the Light) [1966]

Les Flingers – Pa’ Hitam A-Go-Go [1966]

FIFTY FIFTY (50-50)

The late A. Zanne, who previously sang with Les Flingers, then teamed up with Fifty Fifty (50-50) in his 1969 and 1970 recordings. However, there were some statements from certain listeners that Les Flingers had changed their name into Fifty Fifty due to the change in their performance style and that of their line-up, but this was not properly confirmed.

A. Zanne & Fifty Fifty – 4 Tahun Detik Ketika (Four Years Ago) [1969]

A. Zanne & Fifty Fifty – Orang Baru (A New Person) [1969]

A. Zanne & Fifty Fifty – Melati Idaman (My Dream Jasmine) [1969]

A. Zanne & Fifty Fifty – Burong Hantu (The Owl) [1969]

ORKES P.I.B.
The acronym P.I.B. stands for Persekutuan Ibu Bapa Melayu Johor (The Federation of Malay Parents of Johor) and in Muar district, it has its own chapter, where a pop yeh yeh band was formed under its name. The only singer that the band accompanied was the late Anis Es (1944 – 2012). Sadly, both Anis Es and the band did not received much coverage in the media during the pop yeh yeh renaissance in the mid-1980s, although his song Janda Bersolek (A Widow in Make-up) was a hit in the late 1960s where the record was re-printed in 1972 owing to high demand. Indeed, Anis Es had kept himself low-profile despite his active involvement with the band in recording and performance between 1967 and 1969.

Guest Blogger Ghaz: POP YEH YEH SOUND FROM SIGLAP, EAST SINGAPORE -

( A 1961 map of Siglap, east Singapore and the present signboard of Siglap Road. )

According to Wikipedia, the present area of Siglap in east Singapore was founded by Tok Lasam, chieftain of Siglap. It is believed that he sailed to Singapore to escape the Dutch attack on his Sultanate of Gowa in the 1660s. According to legend, it was said that dark thunder clouds had appeared when he first landed in the area which led to the name "Si-Gelap", derived from the Malay word ‘gelap’, meaning "darkness that conceals". Coincidently, there were two pop yeh yeh bands from this district that had managed to accompany several singers between 1966 until 1970 – The Siglap Five and The Siglap Boys.

THE SIGLAP FIVE

The Siglap Five originally consisted of Mohamed Ali, A. Karim, Khamsin and Hamidon Abdullah before the later admission of Jaffar Kupek. The band was formed in 1963. Throughout their career in the 1960s, they had recorded their musical performance under international recording giants like Philips and EMI, apart from small independent labels like Ngee Fat-Playboy. Besides accompanying singers for their respective recording works between 1966 and 1969, they also recorded an EP with Philips Singapore as themselves in 1967.

Jeffridin (b. 1947)

Jeffridin and The Siglap Five performing “Jangan Merayu” (Don’t Beg at Me) in the film “Aksi Kuching” (The Cat’s Act) (1966), a Shaw Brothers’ MFP Studio release. Jeffridin & The Siglap Five - Jangan Merayu (Aksi Kucing 1966) (HQ)

Prior to their assignment on record labels, The Siglap Five had always performed onstage with A. Ramlie (1948-2001). However, after their audition with Philips, A. Ramlie was not included and instead, they teamed up with Jeffridin, A. Ramlie’s close friend in entertainment, upon the instruction by the recording company. Nevertheless, A. Ramlie had nothing to lose as he was offered a contract with Teo Kwang’s Eagle Record in 1966, where he teamed up with The Rythmn Boys and other bands later. Between 1966 and 1967, Jeffridin made 4 records with The Siglap Five, the songs in which had managed to hit the radio charts in both Singapore and Malaysia. Due to the remarkable success in which the records sold well, Jeffridin earned the title The Best Malay Artiste by Philips in 1968.

Both Jeffridin and The Siglap also appeared as guest stars in the film Aksi Kuching (The Cat’s Act) (1966), in which they performed a song called Jangan Merayu (Don’t Beg Me). The song was later re-recorded by Ahmad Daud and John Lee Quintet on an EMI’s SP in the same year, owing to contractual obligation.

After a long hiatus, The Siglap Five made a comeback album with Jeffridin in 1997, this time with a Malaysian label called SRC. For this recording, The Siglap Five consisted of Eddie Salim Salleh (guitarist), Mohamed Ali (bassist), Rahmat Mulok (drummer) and Hamidon Abdullah (keyboard). They worked together for an album titled Tiada Bayangan Nyata (There Is No Clear Shadow), and that marked the end of their collaboration since then. For this album, they recorded completely new songs but still applied the same pop yeh yeh concept, the same approach that Jeffridin took for his albums made since the early 1990s, upon the request from his fans.
